Overview: Lower School
What kind of educational experience will prepare young people best for college and the changing future beyond? Our enduring belief is that the fundamental skills of reading, writing, and mathematics will continue to be essential aspects of any strong education.

We remain certain that students who have been solidly prepared in English, science, mathematics, foreign language, social studies and the arts will not only continue to have competitive advantages at college but indeed, will be in a position as adults, to respond to a changing society. Processing and utilizing new information, analyzing and synthesizing complex problems, using technology as an important tool for learning and research, developing teamwork skills as well as a passion for learning are all vital for today's student.

At Elgin Academy, Lower School students are receiving an education that is rooted in the best traditions of the American college preparatory approach. We believe our approach provides young children with the opportunity to maximize their potential and prepare well for later grades, college and beyond. The reality for those who will live the majority of their life in the 21st Century is that they will encounter constant change.

While rapid change is certain, its exact nature is not. We believe that both our curriculum and community experience offer students a unique opportunity to face the future with confidence and enthusiasm. We invite you to learn more by reading this document, visiting our Lower School and meeting with our faculty.

While the curriculum provides significant structure and ensures a core background for all students, it also allows each individual the flexibility of a program that is appropriate, challenging and of particular interest. Students are required to take language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, foreign language and physical education. The Academy prepares a document entitled, The Elgin Academy Learning Experience which provides an overview for Lower School parents. You may request this document by contacting the Admission and Marketing Office.

The Next Step
Prospective families should call the Admission Office at 847.695.0303 to schedule a class visit/screening.
The Admission Office will gladly answer any additional questions you may have about the Lower School program. Also, on-campus Saturday morning Admission Receptions for prospective families are held monthly. This is a great opportunity for families to learn about the Academy, meet faculty and division directors, and tour the campus with current Student Tour Guides (see Admission Receptions for dates).

Note: Although the January and February Admission Open Houses are specifically designed for screening prospective PS and PK students, it is also intended for parents (only) of students applying for Kindergarten. Kindergarten applicant visits are scheduled on weekday mornings only from 8:30-11:30 am.

Lower School Co-curricular Programs
EA's Lower School offers a number of age-appropriate co-curricular programs specially designed for children in Preschool through 4th Grade. A sampling of activities offered is available by downloading the following schedule (January-March 2007
) [PDF format].

Lower School Community Service
Each grade level in the Lower School is involved in an ongoing community service project and also undertakes special projects, for example in times of crisis.

Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten take part in “Books for Little Angels” along with our Upper School students; they collect books for underprivileged children in the Elgin area.

Kindergarten makes muffins every week for PADS and our Upper School students deliver them.

1st grade collected supplies for a classroom in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and the Lower School as a whole raised funds to help those affected by the hurricane.

2nd grade makes and sells valentine cards with the proceeds going to a local charity.

3rd grade supports a local animal shelter.

4th grade operates the recycling service in Lower School.

We are always on the lookout for additional projects that will benefit from the involvement of our students and vice versa.
