Athletic Department Mission Statement
The Elgin Academy Athletic Department’s mission is to provide maximum challenge and maximum support for each of its student athletes and teams in order to be competitive in interscholastic sports. This is achieved through:

1. Developing the knowledge, skills, attitudes (respect, sportsmanship, competitive spirit, self-discipline, passion, leadership), and teamwork (cooperation, trust, friendship) necessary for the students to have a positive experience, to achieve their fullest potential, to strive for success, to be confident about their place in the world, and proudly represent Elgin Academy on the athletic field.

2. Stressing a proactive partnership of coaches, faculty, parents, and students.

3. Being an integral part of the educational program stressing honesty, respect, fairness, and accepting of diversity.

Sportsmanship | Condition Considerations

Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is a very important issue that needs to be addressed. Many of us participate in, or are spectators of, sports at many different levels. I would like to remind both adults and student-athletes of the elements of good sportsmanship. Each person has a role to play in sports. Each of us should do our parts and let others do theirs. The following is adapted from the Ethics Code of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Parents

  • Remember that the adults associated with sport are the first people to model sportsmanship by our actions.
  • Remember that your child is involved in organized sports for their enjoyment not yours.
  • Focus on your child's efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event.
  • Teach your child that an honest effort is as important as a victory. Never ridicule your child for losing a game.
  • Remember that people learn best by example. Applaud good plays by both teams.
  • Raise disagreements with officials or coaches through proper channels rather than questioning judgment and honesty in public.
  • Demonstrate appropriate social behavior at games by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or umpires.

Players

  • Participate in practices and games with full commitment and enthusiasm.
  • Know, respect, and play by the rules.
  • Respect yourself, your teammates, coaches, officials, and opponents.
  • Never argue with an official.
  • Control your temper and language.
  • Avoid the "winning-at-all-costs" mentality.
  • Be a good sport by cheering good plays by both teams.
  • Refuse to take unfair advantage of rules and other people.
  • Treat all players as you would like to be treated.

"In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more that that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?
"

- Jesse Owens, US Olympic Runner

Condition Considerations
Due to weather, late arrivals, traffic conditions and unforeseen events, games may not go as scheduled or have to be cancelled. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to all those involved in the sport, and I ask for your patience in dealing with the things we cannot control.
