Co-curricular Programs
Community Service
Lower School
Each grade
level in the Lower School is involved in an ongoing community
service project and also undertakes special projects, for example in
times of crisis.
During the 2005-2006 academic year, EA's
Preschool and
Pre-Kindergarten take part in “Books for Little Angels” - along with our
Upper School students, they collect books for underprivileged children in
the Elgin area. Kindergarten makes muffins every week for PADS and our
Upper School students deliver them. The 1st grade collected
supplies for a classroom in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and the
Lower School as a whole raised funds to help those affected by the
hurricane. 2nd grade make and sell valentine cards with the
proceeds going to a local charity. 3rd grade supports a local
animal shelter, and 4th grade operates the recycling service in
Lower School. We are always on the lookout for additional projects, which
will benefit from the involvement of our students and vice versa.
For more information,
please feel free to contact
Mr. Harry
Gould, Lower School Director.
Middle School
MS
students may participate in a number of Community Service opportunities
throughout the school year. The two organizations that are mainly
responsible for those service projects are:
- Middle School
Student Council (divided into two groups: grades 5/6 and grades 7/8)
- Middle School
Service Club (a group comprised of students from 5th
through 8th grade).
Middle School Community Service
Projects benefit a
number of sources. Here are just a few of the ways we are able to provide
service both globally and closer to home:
-
EA's
school community (i.e., recycling, campus beautification)
-
the local Elgin community (i.e., projects designed for the Wayside
Center, the Crisis Center, the Anderson Animal Shelter, Meals on Wheels)
-
the global community (i.e, the Red Cross, the Heart Association,
American Cancer Society, Hurricane Katrina relief).
While the Middle School supports some organizations on a regular basis,
students can also design projects that support their personal passions
including a recent "ice cream sundae sale" to raise funds to help support
sea turtles! For more information, please feel free to contact
Mrs. Sandy Revak, Middle School Director.
Upper School
Community service is a longstanding tradition in the EA Upper
School. While it is not a requirement, the vast majority of our students
participate in the program while in our Upper School, and many assume
leadership positions to help organize the participation of fellow
students. Opportunities are available for all grade levels; therefore,
students who cannot drive, for example, are still given numerous roles in
helping those around them.
Our programs range from
providing gifts for needy children during the holiday season to a group
that meets weekly to deliver breakfast to the homeless at PADS (Public
Action to Deliver Shelter). Other activities include mentoring children
for the Boys and Girls Club, collecting items for a local food pantry,
partaking in the CROP Walk, donating at blood drives, or participating in
a Spring Break service trip to the Dominican Republic. For more
information, please feel free to contact our Upper School community service
coordinator,
Senora Kathy
Rusniak.
