Elgin Academy ACT Scores
Point to High Achievement
ACT scores for Elgin Academy’s Class of 2010 are the highest
posted within the last five years by Upper School students according to Seth
Hanford, Assistant Head of School and Director of the Upper School. The students in the Class of 2010, who took
the test on various dates during the 2009-10 school-year, posted an average
composite score of 26.1 out of a possible 36.
The previous best composite score for the past five years was 25.3,
achieved by the Class of 2009. The ACT is designed to measure the skills needed
for success in first year college coursework.
“We’re very proud of our
students and are encouraged by both the excellent performance by the Class of
2010 and the multi-year performance of our graduates,” said Hanford.
From 2006 to 2010, the average composite score for Upper School
students has fluctuated, ranging from 25.2 to 26.1. During the same time span, the average
composite score in Illinois varied from 20.5 to 20.7 and nationally, from 21.1
to 21.0.
Elgin Academy posted higher composite scores than local public
schools as announced on district websites.
Barrington High School reports a composite score of 24.4 and scores for
St. Charles East and St. Charles North are 23.5 and 23.7 respectively. U46 schools averaged 19.6 and District 300
averaged 20.4.
ACT establishes college-readiness benchmarks in four areas which are used as
a measure of students' ability to earn passing grades in college-level
coursework. Elgin Academy’s average scores in these four areas this year were
27.6 for English, 25.1 for math, 26.3 for reading and 24.6 for science—all significantly
above benchmark indicators and well-above state averages.
"These scores are the result not only of a strong group of high
achieving students, but also of our teachers and a curriculum that allow
students to reach their potential,” said Hanford.
