ELGIN ACADEMY ANNOUNCES NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL
ELGIN, Ill.-Elgin Academy announces Seth L. Hanford as the Academy’s new Head of School, beginning July 1, 2012. Mr. Hanford is succeeding Dr. John Cooper, who has accepted a headship at TMI-The Episcopal School of Texas.
Mr. Hanford, who has served for more than 20 years in education, will become Elgin Academy’s 36th Head of School. Since 2006, he has held the position of Assistant Head of School at Elgin Academy and was appointed as the Academy’s Upper School Director in 2004. In both roles he has been a highly effective leader, balancing the demands of day-to-day operations with academic and college preparatory responsibilities while engaging successfully with all constituencies of the school: students, faculty, staff, parents, trustees, and alumni.
“We are excited to introduce Mr. Hanford as our next Head of School,” said Fred Masnato, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “The Board and I have the utmost confidence in Seth Hanford’s ability to lead this community as it moves forward. He is well matched to expand the range of work already underway at the school and continue its long tradition of academic excellence. We have selected an individual who is an educator as well as an administrator. He is deeply dedicated to serving students of all ages and has a profound understanding and ongoing commitment to the larger world of independent education.”
Mr. Hanford has an M.A. in Educational Administration from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, with a specialization in private school leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, with Distinction, in History, from the University of Pennsylvania. An independent school graduate himself, Mr. Hanford’s past experience includes work as a teacher and advisor in both Upper and Middle School divisions at two other independent schools – Greens Farms Academy in Connecticut and Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School in Missouri, where he also held an administrative position as Dean of Students. Diverse in his many roles as an educator and extremely supportive of teachers and students alike in their pursuit of learning, Mr. Hanford is currently active with the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). He has served on the ISACS Administrative Services Committee, participated on various ISACS accreditation teams, and has attended national educational conferences and seminars.
“I am thrilled and humbled to have been selected as the next Head of School at Elgin Academy,” Hanford said. “I have been privileged to wear many hats at a number of excellent independent schools and look forward with much eagerness to serve the Elgin Academy community as Head of School. I believe it is important to foster the conditions necessary for students to think critically, gain an appreciation for learning, and develop a desire to use their skills and knowledge to make the world around them a better place. We do that at Elgin Academy.”
Dr. Cooper expressed his best wishes to the Elgin Academy community. “I am pleased that the Search and Advisory Committees have worked diligently on selecting a candidate who possesses a strong understanding of both our unique school as well as the larger network of independent schools. I have known Seth for nearly a decade, working closely with him on matters ranging from curriculum issues to student discipline and important school financial decisions. Seth is an educator with strong convictions and good instincts. I am confident that the transition from my leadership to his will be a smooth one.”
