Elgin Academy Announces 2013 Illinois State Scholars

Elgin Academy Announces 2013 Illinois State Scholars

Elgin Academy is pleased to announce that eleven seniors, representing 27 percent of the Class of 2013, have been recognized as 2013-14 Illinois State Scholars. The prestigious award, given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), recognized 18,863 high school students this year. Since 1979, over 582,000 Illinois students have been honored as State Scholars.

Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors from 749 different high schools across the state. Traditionally, their selection is based on SAT or ACT scores, as well as class rank at the end of junior year. However, since Elgin Academy does not use a class rank system in evaluating students’ performance, their grade point averages and strength of schedule figured into the decision.

“We congratulate this fine group of students and their parents,” said Doug Sept, Director of the Upper School, “and we also salute the Elgin Academy faculty for their commitment to academic excellence.”

The eleven students are: Jessica Cianci of Batavia, Brigitte Keslinke of Algonquin, Colter Kozal of Elgin, Christopher Monti of Cary, Shayna Oriold of St.Charles, Siyona Ravi of Algonquin, Owen Rogers of Geneva, Samayra Siddiqui of Elgin, Mary Elizabeth Snell of Cary, Claire Stone of St. Charles, and Jeffrey Tang of Algonquin.

While the prestigious recognition does not include a monetary award, recipients are encouraged to cite the honor on applications for college admission and scholarships in addition to completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after Jan. 1 to determine eligibility for federal and state aid, including Illinois' $400 million need-based Monetary Award Program (MAP).

Chartered in 1839, Elgin Academy is the leading independent, coeducational, Preschool-12th grade college preparatory school in the northwestern and western suburbs of Chicago. It is dedicated to a classical curriculum of academic excellence, development of high moral character and a spirit of community. Elgin Academy enrolls approximately 500 students in preschool through grade 12 from Elgin, Barrington, St. Charles, Algonquin, Dundee and 35 other communities in Northern Illinois. One hundred percent of its graduating seniors are admitted to top four-year colleges.
