Welcome Alumni

Dear Elgin Academy Alumni, Despite the tremendous efforts of the Board, school leadership and other dedicated community members to find a path forward, the Elgin Academy Board determined that our model of an independent Preschool through 12th grade school is no longer sustainable in Elgin. It was with a heavy heart that, at their November 2023 meeting, the Board of Trustees voted that Elgin Academy will close at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. Learn More

Roland Imes ‘49
In honor of EA’s birthday, we are beginning a series of alumni giving stories. We are so proud of our alumni and their generosity. First up is Roland Imes ‘49.

Roland had many interests and passions while a student at Elgin Academy. During his time at EA he was a leader, a performer, and an athlete. His senior photo lists him as the President of many clubs including the Boys’ Chorus. He lettered in football, played basketball, and set a track record or two.

Roland always looked back fondly at his time at EA and two of his greatest loves in life were the Academy and the theater. Roland remained a passionate supporter of our school throughout his life and made donations that helped advance the arts. He contributed to the Capital Campaign for the construction of the Rider Center for Media and the Arts. More recently, he made a bequest to Elgin Academy to help us do some critical restoration work on the Sears Art Gallery.

When asked why he loved Elgin Academy, he said “It is important to me that Elgin Academy should continue for many years to teach and coach and encourage other young adults to be their best”. Well said, Roland.

We are grateful to Roland and the many other alumni who support Elgin Academy through their philanthropic gifts.

Jeanne Behmer

Recently, the family of Jeanne Marilyn Behmer-Wisniewski, class of 1946, generously donated a special souvenir -- a sterling silver spoon dated August 20, 1885 that features a detailed engraving of Old Main. When the family reached out to EA, we went to the yearbooks to learn a little more about Jeanne. She was at Elgin Academy for a single year, but was known as an artist by her peers. She was a member of the Aeichlorians, which was a popular girls group that was a campus fixture for many years. She was also a member of a discussion group called the Chameleons who, according to the yearbook, discussed a wide variety of topics including the many theories of reincarnation. She and fellow senior Tom Twyman, created two plaster sculptures that were accepted by the jury of the Regional High School Art Exhibition in Chicago. We are so grateful for the opportunity to walk down memory lane and learn at little more about our alums and EA in 1946.
