Congratulations to Jimmy John Liautaud, Class of 1982, who is a recipient of the 2018 Horatio Alger Award.
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that Jimmy John Liautaud, owner, founder, and chairman, of Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, has been selected for membership in this prestigious organization.
Jimmy John joins 11 other esteemed business, civic and cultural leaders from across North America in receiving 2018 honors. For more than 70 years, the Horatio Alger Award has been annually bestowed upon admired leaders who have succeeded despite facing adversities, and who have remained committed to higher education and charitable efforts in their local communities.
Jimmy John has shared how his relationship with Jim Lyons, Elgin Academy Dean of Students from 1980 to 1991, contributed to his success in life. To honor Lyons, Liautaud donated a $1 million gift to Elgin Academy to provide partial funding for the Harold D. Rider Media, Science, & Fine Arts Center that is also home to the Liautaud-Lyons Upper School. We are honored that Jimmy John proudly carries the Elgin Academy alumni banner, and once again, we congratulate him.
