Elgin Academy COVID Policies

Updated 5.11.23

Overview

Since our return to the hilltop in the fall of 2020, we have continued to follow the guidance of the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Kane County Health Department with the goal of allowing students to learn on-campus as safely and as often as possible. As COVID-19 continues to evolve, we acknowledge that the current guidance has moved into a phase that encourages more individualized decisions regarding masking, distancing, and other precautions. We look forward to the opportunities that these changes will provide. At the same time, we recognize that there are members of our community who will continue to take a more cautious approach for a variety of personal reasons. Our community will continue, as it has since the start of the pandemic, to support one another by adhering to requirements when necessary and respecting individual choices when those options are available.

Masks

Face masks are required for those who have tested positive for COVID-19, as outlined below, and are recommended for others.

Individuals with Symptoms

Possible symptoms of COVID-19 include the following:

  • Fever of 100.4F or greater
  • New onset of moderate to severe persistent headache
  • New cough or shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Loss of sense of taste or smell

It is recommended that individuals who experience one or more of these symptoms be tested for COVID-19 as advised by their healthcare provider.

Individuals Who Test Positive for COVID-19

Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 will need to remain off campus until they have met the following criteria:

  • Minimum of 5 days have passed from their first symptoms or their positive test date (the first day of symptoms or the test date are considered day 0)
  • Fever-free for 24 hours with no fever-reducing medication
  • Free from vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours
  • Improvement of other symptoms

Once all of the criteria have been met, the individual can return to campus. The individual will be required to consistently and correctly wear a face mask from day 6 through day 10 of their COVID-19 infection. Gaiters, bandanas, and masks with one-way valves are not acceptable.

Individuals Who Have Been Exposed to COVID-19

It is recommended that individuals who have had a known close-contact exposure to COVID-19, such as household members of someone who has tested positive, mask until 10 days after their last exposure as advised by their healthcare provider.
