Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics

STEAM programs focus on guiding student inquiry, active learning, and critical thinking while helping students to connect principles in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. STEAM programs foster students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. Which provides students with a pallet of resources at their disposal to develop as innovators, leaders, and learners for the 21st century!

STEAM Programs (Grades 1-4)

STEAM Programs are offered the weeks of July 8th through July 26th. All classes are one week long in. Participants can chose to attend one or more courses per week. Our camp staff will supervise breaks and transitions to make sure everyone has a fun safe camp experience. Stop Motion Animation

Students in Stop Motion Animation will explore elements needed to create a popular form of video art. Students will develop skills in photography, video editing, and storytelling, creating an original stop motion animation video.

Kids in the Kitchen

Little chefs will make an assortment of snacks, meals, and desserts while having fun in the kitchen. This class will stress the importance of kitchen and food handling safety, while learning to use a variety of kitchen appliances, measuring tools, and utensils. Kids will get cooking, making foods they love and new friends in the kitchen this summer!

Adeline Moon has been a member of the Elgin Academy faculty since 2015 and teaches second grade. She enjoys cooking and has been teaching afterschool cooking classes. Adeline has elementary Education degree from University of Illinois.

Exploring Improv - Get Your Giggles On! 

Students will lean improv basics through group games and activities. They will explore dialogue, action, story, and characters that are all created collaboratively by the players and unfolds in present time, without use of an already prepared, written script. At the end of the session campers will perform in their very own improv show and surrender to the fun of play and discovery!

Teagan Moore ’18 is a recent alumnus of Elgin Academy and is currently studding theater, art, and music at Knox College. Teagan is on the executive board for the Knox College Improv Club and a member of the Knox College Choir. As a student at Elgin Academy Teagan was involved in choir, theater, and led the Improv Club. Teagan also has four years’ experience working and volunteering in Elgin Academy’s Musical Theater Camp and Adventure Camp summer programs.

Matt Cagle is a sophomore at Knox College majoring in sociology and minoring in educational studies. He is on the executive board for the Knox College Improv Club and he also hosts a radio show called the Big Picture on WVKC radio (the voice of Knox College). The past several years he has worked as a camp counselor for variety of different summer camps. Matt enjoys teaching, improvising, laughter, and the free flowing creative process.

Global Art Adventure

Campers will embark on a global art adventure visiting different countries each day and creating art from around the world. Students will expand their knowledge of other cultures through creative art projects and multicultural activities. Adventure awaits - book your trip today!

Explore animals from different continents through art. Students will learn to use different mediums to create wildlife inspired projects. Lions, tigers, and bears oh my!

Let's solve some of the world's problems! Students will investigate real problems from around the world and design solutions to help solve them. They'll have fun working with a team while learning about the engineering design process and technology. Parents are invited to attend part of the final session for the team project showcase.

Engerneering Adventures

Instructor: Lydia Gillus

Lydia Gillus is the Executive Director of STEM Savvy, which provides programs that pique kid's interest in STEM careers. She has a Computer Engineering degree from the University of Michigan and MBA from Loyola University Chicago. Mrs. Gillus has been teaching STEM focused programs to youth for over 17 years.

 


Culinary Adventures

Join us for new cooking adventure each day! Students will work together in a hands-on environment to develop and expand their cooking skills. This class will stress proper food handling while building cooking and baking techniques. Immerse your budding chef in a world of culinary creativity and discovery this summer.

Improv FUNdamentals

In improvisation most or all of what is performed is unplanned or unscripted and created spontaneously by the performers. In this class, students will learn improv techniques in a supportive environment that allows students to take greater risks, gain confidence in their choices, themselves, and trust their fellow players. The class will focus on dialogue, action, story, and characters, with a concentration on creating strong scenes through fun, active, group games and activities. Students will then have the opportunity at the end of the session to perform and put their skills on display!

Weaving

Explore the creative possibilities of textile design through weaving! In this class, students will learn the basics of hand weaving on a loom and learn about current weaving artists, such as Maryanne Moodie. They will become comfortable with weaving tools and the vocabulary of weaving. After they have mastered the basics, students will create their own weavings using an endless possibilities of yarns, beads and natural objects.

3D Printing

3D printing provides the potential for every student to create, innovate and fabricate. In this class students will learn about 3D printer hardware and the print process. They will also explore software that enables students to create, modify, and print their own 3D models. Students will also learn how scientists and engineers are using 3D printing to make a difference in the world today.

Op Art

Are you interested in creating your own optical illusions? Optical illusion art, or Op Art, is a fascinating art movement that creates stunning images that trick the mind by using very bold, contrasting colors and geometric forms. Students in this class will learn about the Op Art movement of the 1960s and how Op Art got its name. Students will become familiar with artwork by the artists Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely. The class will culminate with students creating their own work of Op Art using rulers, pencils, markers and a little magic!

Sketch Improv

In this class students will explore different long form improvisation structures and learn to develop and maintain a strong individual voice. The class will focus on developing and maintaining strong characters, as well as, learning to hold on to your initial choices while at the same time, expanding on the choices made in the scene. Students will work together to develop a sketch and to create and weave unexpected, character-based choices into that scene. At the end of the session students will have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.

Painting with Acrylics

Students will learn the basics of acrylic painting in this introductory painting course. Over the course of the week, students will learn about value scales, color theory and how to apply paint to a painting to make it look dimensional. Students will come away from class with an amazing painting to hang at home and a better understanding of how acrylics can be used.

Adventures in Sewing

Students will learn basic sewing techniques and make several easy projects that will incorporate basic sewing skills.  Class will include instruction on how to run a sewing machine as well as hand sewing techniques.

Bonita Goist has been sewing all her life and quilting for 20 years.  Sewing is her passion and was her profession for ten years at the owner of Prairie Shop Quilts in Batavia.
