Upper School students joined with students nationwide to participate in a walkout on Wednesday, March 14th at 10:00 a.m. to pay tribute to the 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and to raise awareness about issues of school safety and the impact of gun violence. The voluntary walkout was one of several activities organized by a group of Upper School Seniors to address the issues. Shortly after the tragedy, the students went to Upper School Director Mr. Sept for approval to leave class. Mr. Sept not only agreed; he entrusted the students with planning the walkout and any events related to it.
Before the walkout, students gathered in Edwards Hall where they were invited to sign a banner proclaiming "We Stand With You" that will be sent to the student body at Douglas High School. Students were also given the option of participating in student lead discussion groups to discuss gun violence. Promptly at ten o'clock, most Upper Schoolers walked out of Edwards Hall to the quad where they joined hands and formed a circle to observe 17 minutes of silence to honor the 17 victims in Parkland. Many Upper School faculty members who had initially refrained from participation in the morning's events out of respect for student voice and leadership, joined the circle.
Senior Caitlin Sharma, one of the organizers of the walkout said, "We are joining students across the country in this movement to make sure that no student dies at school as a result of gun violence ever again."
