Ms. Kruse Recruits International Students

In December, Katie Kruse, Director of International Studies, spent thirteen days in China recruiting students for the 2019-2020 school year. She discussed the opportunities for international students at Elgin Academy at recruitment fairs in Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen.

Additionally, Ms. Kruse traveled to Chengdu, where administrators at Shuangliu Middle School welcomed her. In an official signing ceremony against a backdrop of nation-state flags, Ms. Kruse, on behalf of Elgin Academy, entered into a sister school relationship with the large school in the Sichuan province.

Ms. Kruse was hired as the Director of International Studies in summer 2018 to advance international enrollment and expand student life for international students.

Kindergarteners' Art Displayed Locally

Our Kindergarten class created art in the style of Ezra Jack Keats, the author and illustrator of Snowy Day, a 1962 children's picture book. Keats received the 1963 Caldecott Medal for his illustrations. It features a boy named Peter exploring his neighborhood after the first snowfall of the season. To see our students work visit Arabica Cafe on Douglas Street in downtown Elgin. It's on display through the end of January.

Anika Jaitley Spells Sumptuous for the Win

Congratulations to this year's Middle School Spelling Bee classroom winners: Mahi Patel, Sebastian Mercado, Vamika Sanjay, Lillian Dirickson, Rahul Gowda, Ryan Zonts, Anika Jaitley, and Hailey Poziombka. On Monday, December 10th, before an audience of their peers, they competed in the Middle School Spelling Bee. Eighth-grader, Anika Jaitley correctly spelled sumptuous to win first place. The runner-up was sixth grader, Vamika Sanjay.

Illinois State Scholars Announced

Congratulations to Elgin Academy's Illinois State Scholars-Kristina Beligratis, Madigan Boborci, Neha Karna, Ethan Martin, and Leeann Rao. These exceptional students rank in approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors in Illinois and are chosen each year based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth-semester class rank. Each year approximately 20 percent of the senior class are recognized as Illinois State Schools.

Congratulations to the NW Illinois Regional History Bowls Champs

The small but mighty team of sophomore Taylor Bundrant, freshman Tommy Guyett, and fifth-grader Jack Guyett took first place at the Northwest Illinois Regional History Bowl competition on Saturday, December 1st.  The threesome beat the undefeated team from Keith Country Day School (KCDS)to secure the top spot. The win earned the team a bid to the 2019 National History Bowl championships in the spring.

Cast of A Christmas Story

As part of a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Rider Center and the Kimball Street Theatre, the Elgin Academy Fine Arts Department offered a delightful version of A Christmas Story: The Musical. Based on the humorous writings of author Jean Shepherd (sophomore Aaron Kirk), this beloved holiday story adapted from the play of the same name follows the exploits of Ralphie Parker (5th grader Kaan Bruss) and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts--an official Red Ryder carbine­ action 200­ shot Range Model air rifle.
